- Study of Medicinal Plants
It is estimated that Bassar's rain forests have more than 20,000 vascular plant species.
Many of them have not undergone extensive scientific study for their pharmacological and chemical constituents.
To a large extent, the country's extensive variety of flora is attributed to this topographical diversity.
B-PHARMA natural products research will focus on:
- Characterizing the chemical constituents (biologically active small molecules) of the medicinal plants, and fungi in Bassar's rain forests.
- Determination of the structures of isolated chemical constituents by NMR, and IR spectroscopy and many other techniques.
- The isolated chemical constituents will be screened for their therapeutic properties using in vitro and in vivo systems.
- The isolated chemical constituent structures will be modified to increase their efficacy or to target other known diseases
